Research Scientist

The Department of Oncologic Pathology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is looking for a Research Scientist who is highly skilled and proficient in pathology, cell, and/or tissue-based imaging. We are looking for an experienced individual with strong knowledge of imaging technology and immunohistochemistry techniques and the ability to work independently to lead the deployment of innovative imaging technology – multiplexed ion beam imaging (MIBI). The Scientist will be responsible for the overall operations of the technology and will have a key role in the research and development needed for validation. The scientist will also work with other investigators and research staff to develop research projects and protocols to utilize the newly developed MIBI technology.

The Scientist may supervise technical staff and will report directly to the Faculty Leader for this program. Continued engagement with the academic mission including contributions to collaborative publications and grant applications are also expected in this position.

o Support the Faculty Leader and Oversight committee in setting the scientific and strategic direction as well as the operational priorities for the program.
o Manage the day-to-day operations of the MIBI program
o Oversee operation and maintenance of equipment including preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and purchasing responsibility
o Manage staff as needed. Train lab personnel and researchers who utilize the facility
o Develop and maintain SOPs related to operations and quality control
o Ensure compliance with DFCI Environmental Health and Safety regulations as well as the standard operation procedures specific to the Department of Oncologic Pathology
o Lead the development, validation and deployment of the technology and future enhancements
o Conduct research and development of new experimental designs and techniques in response to specific research needs
o Validate new instruments and methods including optimization and continuous improvement activities
o Conduct complex problem solving and troubleshooting novel methods/techniques that will be performed in Multispectral Image analysis
o Assist leader and oversight committee with managing and prioritizing requests
o Work with PIs and research staff to design new experiments and protocols utilizing the MIBI technology
o Oversee and manage project goals, timelines and deliverables
o Contribute to the analysis and documentation of results for researchers as well as interpretation of results to write reports and summaries of findings, including grant preparation, manuscript preparations and presentations
o Plan and schedule Oversight Committee meetings and provide data as needed

• Advanced degree preferred, preferable in a field of science such as biology or chemistry. Those with training in biomedical engineering will also be considered
• Minimum of 4 years’ experience post bachelors degree
• Experience with immunofluorescence is a plus

• Essential basic cell and/or tissue-preparation and microscopy skills including tissue review and annotation, processing, and staining methodologies
• Familiarity with cell or tissue-based imaging and image analysis
• Demonstrated management and leadership skills and experience
• Demonstrated experience with independent research project design
• Strong analytic and problem solving skills, with experience with data acquisition, data analysis, data presentation and documentation
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize multitask and troubleshoot problems
• Strong team player and ability to work well with diverse faculty and staff
• Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate action
• Demonstrated ability to readily acquire new skills and techniques
• Verbal and written proficiency in English
